Watch Video – Gang Rape, The Dark Side Of Egypt’s Protests

(CNN) — Last week, a 22-year-old Dutch journalist was gang-raped in Tahrir Square and had to undergo surgery for severe injuries. The assault reminds us yet again of an often overlooked aspect of the Egyptian revolution.

When Egyptians overthrew their dictator in 2011, one of the first celebratory acts in Tahrir Square included the gang beating and sexual

assault of American journalist Lara Logan, who, like the Dutch journalist, landed in the hospital.

The Logan rape has always been portrayed as another unfortunate byproduct of mob violence. In fact, it was much more than that. It was a warning shot fired by men whose political beliefs are founded on a common pillar: Women must stay out of the public square.

Ehn!! AIDS Scientists Express Hope For Cure

People living with HIV/AIDS.

With Nigerian children rated as the most AIDS infected in the world, this news from Malaysia must be good news indeed.

AIDS scientists have expressed optimism over their search for a cure for the disease Saturday ahead of a major conference in Kuala Lumpur,Malaysia with more funding and research breakthroughs boosting their hopes.

Thousands of delegates will attend the four-day International AIDS Society (IAS) Conference which starts on Sunday in the Malaysian capital, the first time the bi-annual meeting will be held in Asia.

Sharon Lewin from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, said funding for cure research had gone from millions to tens of millions of dollars per year.

“I think we are a long way off, but what has changed in the last three years is a realisation, that there needs to be a commitment (to this),” she told AFP in a telephone interview.

“In 2010, at that time, very few people really believed it was possible… Between that time and now, there has been a major shift. There’s evidence that things have really been moving.”

Deborah Persaud of the US Johns Hopkins Children’s Center in Baltimore, Maryland, said the case of the “Mississippi baby” that her team worked on presented a “ray of hope”.

The baby, born in the US state of Mississippi, was apparently cleared of the virus after being given aggressive anti-retroviral treatment within 30 hours of her birth. She is now almost three years old.

“There needs to be a lot of work done… We have to replicate the case; we need to understand the case,” she told reporters ahead of the conference.

“The key thing for us that we should focus on is to do what we know how to do — and that is identify kids who are infected and treat them early.”

Children below the age of 15 make up 10 percent, or 3.3 million, of the estimated 34 million people infected with HIV worldwide. In total, the global pandemic has claimed 30 million lives.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) is expected to release new medical guidelines at the conference Sunday, which could make more people infected with HIV eligible to receive drugs.

Last month, scientists meeting in Paris to mark the 30th anniversary of the discovery of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, said they have high hopes for a treatment that will be given at an early stage of infection.

But they said people with a long-running, untreated infection and a compromised immune system may never benefit from an envisioned “functional cure” — through which a person would retain traces of the virus but no symptoms.

About 1.8 million people die every year from AIDS, a disease in which the immune system is destroyed, with sufferers exposed to pneumonia, TB and other illnesses.

With 60,000 Nigerian children infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) last year, Nigeria has the highest number of children with the virus in the world, according to the latest report by the United Nations.

The number of children infected with the virus is higher than that of any other country in the world, and is a source of worry for experts with one describing it as “alarming.”

The UN report titled “2013 Progress Report on The Global Plan: Towards the elimination of new HIV infections among children by 2015 and keeping their mothers alive” is the most recent on the global plan which seeks an elimination of new HIV infections among children by 2015, as well as keep their mothers alive.

Busted: Cheating Wife Caught And Forced To Have Sex In The Public

This morning, an MDB reader drew my attention to the story you re about to read about a cheating wife caught in the act in a community close to Anambra state University in Anambra state.
According to reports, the cheating wife was caught in the act with her boyfriend by her husband and the people in the community took it upon themselves to mete out justice on the woman and her lover.
Their judgement: forcing the cheating partners to have $ex in the full glare of the public.
Reportedly, the husband couldn’t watch. He left the scene and went back home to throw out his wife’s belongings.

Agreed, the woman did wrong by cheating, but embarrassing her and her lover like this is just wrong on all levels. Nothing short of barbaric to say the least. I’m just gobsmacked.
Things are really happening in our great country Nigeria.

Female Student Flogged Into Coma

•Iponri High School where a student was beaten to coma

A Chemistry teacher at Iponri Estate Senior High School, Surulere, Lagos, identified as Mr. Sebastine, reportedly beat one of his female students to stupor last Tuesday.

The victim, who is in SS 1, Abigail Chidinma Enyenwa, passed out after she allegedly behaved rudely and acted contrary to his instructions during class session on the fateful day.

PMNews reports the Chemistry teacher was said to have asked all students whose parents were not
present during the school’s open-day to stand on their feet, an instruction which Abigail allegedly ignored.
She reportedly disregarded the teacher’s instruction and sat down while others stood up.

This infuriated the teacher and he called her out, gave her some strokes of the cane for her action.
It was reliably gathered from our source that Abigail passed-out in the process and commotion ensued afterwards.

She regained consciousness minutes later when some packs of sachet water were poured on her by her classmates and her frightened teacher who initially thought she was pretending.

The matter was said to have been reported at Iponri Police Station by the girl’s parents while Sebastine was arrested the following day.

PMNews correspondent further gathered that the school Principal, Mrs Anyah prevented the police from taking the teacher away when they arrived at the school to effect his arrest, claiming teachers don’t beat students to stupor at their school.

A student who does not want his name mentioned and who claimed to be Abigail’s friend, said,

”I’m not in her class and wasn’t in school when it happened. But I heard the story. I asked her and she told me what happened.

“She said she stood up when the teacher asked them to do so but was putting her hands around her waist. She told me that she did not answer him when he asked why she’s not standing properly and the teacher in anger descended on her,” he told P.M.NEWS.

Another student who is Abigail’s classmate and was in class when the incident happened, said:

”She behaved rudely to the teacher. She was behaving as if Mr Sebastine was her boyfriend while he was talking to her. He only gave her four strokes of the cane and she passed out.

“Initially he thought she was pretending but when she didn’t stand up, he became frightened and asked us to go and buy some packs of pure water which we poured on her. I guess she wasn’t feeling alright that day or something was wrong with her.

“Mr Sebastine cannot beat somebody to stupor. He’s not that wicked. Besides, we do receive more than six strokes of the cane from him and we never fainted for once,” he said.

When asked if it was true that the teacher has been suspended, he said:

”he was in school on Wednesday before the police came to arrest him. They came with an arrest warrant but the principal prevented them from taking him away. I have not seen him afterwards but I guess he’s among the teachers who are currently undergoing training. I think that was why he was not in school today(Thursday),” he said.
